COLLEGE
PARK, Md.
– The Virginia softball team (14-32, 5-12
ACC) dropped a 2-0 decision in a rain-shortened game to Maryland (31-15, 5-9 ACC) Sunday at Robert
E. Taylor Stadium. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning
because of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area. The Terrapin victory also
gave UM the series win, two games to one.
The Terps scored their pair of runs in the bottom of the
third, thanks to a two-run homer to right by Sarde Stewart, her seventh bomb of
the season and the second of the series.
In the top of the fourth, Carly Winger led off the inning
with a double to right center and eventually took third on a passed ball, but
was left stranded after a pop out and two groundouts. The Cavaliers left five
runners on base in the game.
Maryland outhit Virginia 4-2. Right
fielder Sarah Tacke recorded a single to accompany Winger’s double.
UVa pitcher Karla Wilburn (9-15) took the loss, throwing five
innings. Sarah Dooley (14-11) got the win for Maryland
in six innings of work with five strikeouts.
Virginia returns to action
with a doubleheader at Towson
Wednesday.
