WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teambegan play in the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament atSpry Soccer Stadium. The tournament is being hosted by Wake ForestUniversity. The Cavaliers, seeded seventh in the tournament, faced offagainst the number two seeded Maryland Terrapins (ranked #5 by SoccerAmerica). UVa jumped on the scoreboard first with two quick goals anddidn’t look back as Virginia held on for a 2-0 shutout victory.

The Cavaliers didn’t waste any time getting down to business, asVirginia scored the eventual game-winning goal at 4:11 when Ryan Trout(Media, Pa./Strath Haven) and Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla./St. ThomasAquinas) executed on a give-and-go. Trout cut through the Marylanddefense, then passes the ball to Barnes and kept cutting towards the goalafter he dished the pass. Barnes fed Trout the ball and he fired a shotpast Maryland’s goalkeeper Christian Lewis to make it a 1-0 UVa lead.

The Cavaliers kept the heat on the Terrapins and added a secondgoal at 18:49 when Drew O’Donnell (Newton Square, Pa./Haverford) and SteveTotten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) assisted on a scoring header by Barnes from10 yards out to give the ‘Hoos a 2-0 cushion. Virginia took its 2-0 leadinto the locker room.

Trailing by two goals, Maryland tried its best to climb back intothe game, however, the Cavalier defense had other thoughts in mind. TheUVa defenders and Cavalier goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan)held the Terrapins scoreless en route to a 2-0 shutout victory.

The win improves UVa’s record to 19-5-3 all-time in the ACCTournament. The Cavaliers have now won 17 of their last 20 contests in theconference tournament, posting a 17-2-1 record during that span.

With the victory, Virginia improves to 11-7-1 overall, while theloss drops Maryland’s record to 14-5-0 on the season. The Cavaliers willnow advance to the semifinal round to take on the number three seeded WakeForest Demon Deacons on Friday, November 12. The contest is schedule tobegin at 8:00 p.m. and will be played at Spry Soccer Stadium.
