PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Virginia wrestling teamfinished fourth out of seven teams in the Keystone Classic with 97.5points. Virginia’s Steve Garland (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) and DavidSantamaria (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) recorded first placefinishes in the 125 and 133 weight classes, respectively. Rider took firstplace in the meet by posting 126.5 points in the tournament, followed byPenn which gathered a total of 122 points on the day. The Keystone Classicwas hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

Garland started UVa off on the right foot as he rolled through the125 class with a 4-0 mark en route to a first place finish. He began theday with a technical fall over Brown’s Ryan Gill before pinning SetonHall’s Anthony Rendina. Garland then gathered a major decision (10-1) overPenn’s Kevin Rucci before earning a 6-4 decision over Central Michigan’sAhmad Sanders in the 125 finals.

Santamaria followed Garland’s lead, as he cruised along through the133 class with a 4-0 mark of his own. He started the afternoon off with apin on Rider’s Joe Pollard before tallying a 12-5 victory over Penn’s BrettVanderveer. Santamaria then advanced to the championship round bydefeating Seton Hall’s Mike Settembrino with a technical fall. In the 133title bout, Santamaria faced a familiar foe, teammate Toby McDonald(Venice, Fla./Venice), who was also competing in the 133 class. McDonaldcollected three consecutive wins with victories over Seton Hall’s MarkVettri in a major decision (11-3), a 6-0 decision over Brown’s JamesCastaneda and a 9-8 decision over Rider’s Mike Harris. In the 133championship match, Santamaria edged McDonald (OTC: 8-8) for the 133 title,McDonald settled for second place.

It looked as though Virginia was going to make it three consecutivefirst place finishes when UVa’s P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) advancedall the way to the finals of the 141 class. After receiving a bye in thefirst round, Bory posted a major decision over Brown’s David Dies andrecorded a 2-1 victory over Rider’s Seneca Cooper to meet CentralMichigan’s Chris Marshall in the 141 title match. Marshall defeated Boryby a 10-4 decision. Bory came away with second place in the 141 class.

At 149, John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College) finished2-2 on the day. Pozniak defeated Pat Hu (Penn-unattached) before fallingto Rider’s Cory DeBias by a count of 12-9. Pozniak then posted a majordecision over Max Galka (Penn-unattached) before dropping an 11-6 decisionto Central Michigan’s Jeremy Hardman.

Jeremy Kirk (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) came away with a sixthplace finish for UVa at 157. Kirk defeated Penn’s Jon Gough 5-1 beforefalling to Joe Nastasi (Penn-unattached) by def. The Cavaliers’ CartneyCurnuck (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) defeated Central Michigan’s RussellClark by a 5-1 count and John Christopher (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City)pinned American’s Aaron Baker in the 157 weight class.

The Cavaliers were without a winner at 165, but Robbie Moutoux(Vienna, Va./George Marshall) reeled in a sixth place finish for UVa in the174 class. Moutoux lost to Brown’s Nick Alemeida by major decision (18-6),before string together consecutive wins over teammate Steve Mazzola(Cleveland, Oh./St. Edward’s) by a 13-4 major decision and an 11-8 victoryover Seton Hall’s Dan Ambrosini. Moutoux lost to Rider’s RJ Haynes in hisnext match by a score of 6-2 to wrap up sixth place.

In the 184 class, Virginia’s Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./BlairAcademy) and Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) placed third andsixth, respectively. After gathering a first round bye, McGrath pinnedBrown’s Karl Rittger and defeated Craig Melcher (Penn-unattached) by an 8-4decision. McGrath then gathered a def. over Seton Hall’s Fikret Dazanoffto take third place. After a first round bye of his own, Massey toppedBrown’s Karl Rittger (4-3) and Central Michigan’s Tom Welsh (7-4) beforesettling for sixth place in the class.

Craig Fenstermaker (Hilton Head, S.C./Northampton) took sixth inthe 197 class. Fenstermaker received a first round bye, then defeatedSeton Hall’s Greg Sawyer by a 6-1 decision. He then lost to Rider’s ToddPalmisano by a technical fall before pinning American’s Josh Schroeder.Fenstermaker then lost by def. to Sawyer to post a sixth place finish inthe 197 class.

In the 285 weight class, Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury)recorded a fifth place finish. Etu lost his first match when he was pinnedby Rider’s Marc DeFrancesco, but rallied to a 2-1 OTC over teammate RyanPainter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) before being pinned by Central Michigan’sJack Leffler. Etu then pinned American’s Ryan Pallinger to claim fifthplace in the heavyweight class. Painter topped UVa teammate Jeremy Wilkins(Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) by a 3-1 decision in the consolation bracket.

The Cavaliers will return to action on December 3-4 when Virginiatravels to Las Vegas, NV to compete in the 1999 Las Vegas Invitational.The competition is scheduled to run all day on both days on theinvitational.
