CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four Virginia football players have receivedrecognition by The Sporting News for their play this season.

Thomas Jones and Noel LaMontagne were named first-team All-Americans by theall sports magazine, while Chris Williams was named to its All-Freshmanfirst team and Jerton Evans to the All-Freshman second team.

For Jones, who set ACC and school records with 1798 yards rushing and 2054all-purpose yards, this is the fourth All-America team he has been namedto, making him a consensus All-American. He is UVa’s first consensusAll-American back since Bill Dudley in 1941.

LaMontagne, a two-time All-ACC selection, becomes the second UVa offensivelineman named first-team All-America this season. He joins center John St.Clair, who was named to the first team by CollegeFootballNews.com.

Williams, a red-shirt freshman from Newport News, Va., started every gameat safety for the Cavaliers this season. He led UVa defensive backs with 69tackles, while adding two interceptions.

Evans, a true freshman from Lynchburg, Va., played in all 11 games thisfall and started the final nine at safety. He led the team with fourinterceptions to become the first true freshman to lead the team since1991. Evans was in on 44 tackles this season, second among UVa’s defensivebacks.

The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 7-4 record, marking the13th consecutive season they have won seven or more games. They will faceIllinois in the Micronpc.com Bowl in Miami, Fla., on Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
