NEW HAVEN, Conn.– Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./Wesst Essex), a member of the United States National Field Hockey team, scored with less than two minutes to play to help her White Elite team end the first weekend of USFHA games undefeated. Her goal, her second one of the season, broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Red team to their first defeat.

After White took a 2-0 lead in the first 22 minutes of play, Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy), who plays on the Elite Red team, scored with less than two minutes to go in the first half to cut the deficit to 2-1 at halftime. Red tied the game at 2-2 with a goal in the 55th minute of play, setting the stage for Vizzuso’s heroics. Lindsay is a member of the United States Under-23 national team.

Vizzuso’s first goal of the season came on Saturday as the Elite White team defeated the Elite Yellow team 5-1.

Incoming assistant field hockey coach Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) scored the game-winner for the Elite White team as they defeated the Elite Blue team in the league’s opening match on Saturday. Her goal in the 19th minute of play held up as the White defeated the Blue 2-1. Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./ Moores-town), a member of the US Under-23 team and a member of the Virginia lacrosse team, the 1998 national runners-up, is a member of the Blue team. Goalie for the Blue team is Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton). Worthington is a member of the top-ranked goalie tandem at the University of Virginia and is also a member of the United States Under-19 team.

Play continues this weekend at the College of New Jersey in Trenton, N.J. Games begin at 9:00 am on Saturday, June 20 as Lindsay’ Elite Red team takes on the Elite Yellow team,w hich boasts US National team member Lori Mastropietro (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock) and fellow Cavaliers Julia Richardson (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) and Ellen Wiese (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock). Wiese was a part of the vaunted Virginia goalie tandem that led the nation in scoring defense. The Elite Yellow team is coached by National Coach of the Year Missi Sanders.

The semifinals and finals will take place on Saturday, July 4 at the University of Maryland.

The University of Virginia finished the 1997 regular season ranked number one in the country and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in school history. The Cavaliers also led the nation in scoring defense, allowing less than a goal per game, and in shutouts, recording 11. Virginia opens up the 1998 season at the ACC-Big 10 Challenge in St. Louis on September 5 against the Ohio State University. The Cavaliers will return home on Thursday, September 10 to face the Northeastern University Wildcats. The coach of the Wildcats, Cheryl Murtagh, is also the coach of the USFHA Elite Red team.
