WINNIPEG, Canada – Cavalier All-American Michelle Vizzuso(Fairfield, N.J./West Essex), the Virginia career leader in assists, didwhat she does best and helped the USA Field Hockey team defeat Mexico 3-0today in round robin play at the Pan American Games.

In the 27th minute, Vizzuso stole the ball and went on a breakawayto the cage, where she drew out the Mexican keeper before calmly slottingthe ball to teammate Cindy Werley who desposited the ball in the emptycage. Werley’s goal gave the USA the 1-0 advantage that it would need towin the game, but the Americans added two goals in the last six minutes ofthe game to defeat the Mexican squad 3-0. Vizzuso, who had 60 carrerassists for the Cavaliers, ranks 11th all-time in NCAA Division I historyin that statistic.

With the win, the USA improves to 4-1 and all they need is a tieagainst winless Chile to advance to the gold medal game against nemesisArgentina on August 4. The USA and Chile (0-3-2) will play tomorrow, August2.

Of note is that the Argentine team will be without the services oftop defender Cecelia Rognoni, who was ejected from the tournament followinga ball-throwing incident. The winner of the Pan American Games willreceive an automatic berth into the Olympic Games in 2000.
