Charlottesville, VA — Virginia’s Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and Darci Borski (Philadelphia, Pa./ Nazareth Academy) both notched a pair of goals to help the Cavaliers defeat the George Mason Patriots tonight in the first round of the Virginia Soccer Classic. Virginia opened up a 4-0 lead, scoring three times in a 15 minute span in the second half before allowing a late Patriot goal.

The Cavaliers attacked early, and in the 10th minute Aly Benitez (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) hit the crossbar but the ball was collected by the Mason keeper. Borski finally put the Hoos on the board with a goal in the 35th minute as she scooped up a missed clear and ran the ball in at the top of the box. Her shot trickled through the arms of the keeper to give Virginia the lead they would not relinquish. The Virginia defense allowed the Patriots only one shot in the first half.

Virginia’s second goal came as Lindsey converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Laura Gaworecki (Spring, Tex./Klein) sent a cross to the front of the cage and in attempting to play the ball, Erin Englehardt (Hasbrouk Heights, N.J./Immaculate Heart) was fouled in the box. Lindsey’s kick beat the keeper to the lower right of the cage to put the Hoos up 2-0.

Lindsey hit the back of the cage for a second time just nine minutes later as she volleyed an Ashley Meeker (Zanoni, Va./Hampton Roads) corner kick service into the upper left corner of the goal for a 3-0 lead. Borski closed out the scoring as she chested down a serve from Lache at the top of the box and shot the ball into the cage in the 68th minute, putting the Cavaliers up 4-0.

Mason got on the board as Caroline Ken poked a scramble in front of the cage to Angela Lombardi, who was on the goal mouth and coverted the pass in the 78th minute.

Julie Harris (Ridgfield, Conn./Ridgfield) played all 90 minutes in the cage for Virginia and recorded one save.

The Cavaliers will face Florida on Sunday in the second day of the Virginia Soccer Classic. Game time against the Gators is 3:30. In other action in the Classic, Hartford defeated Florida 3-0 in action on Friday. George Mason will face Hartford on Sunday in the first game of the day.
