Cavaliers Drop Heartbreaker to #4 Wake Forest 3-2

University of Virginia’s Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) scored 34 seconds into the game today to give the Hoos (10-6) a quick 1-0 lead, but it would not hold up as the Demon Deacons scored three of the next four goals to defeat the Cavaliers 3-2.

Seconds into the game Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casay) corralled a Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) pass in the circle and got the ball to Vizzuso, who chipped it into the net for the early 1-0 lead. Wake came back to take a 2-1 lead as Kelly Doton stuck in a pass from Heather Aughinbaugh on the goal line at the 21:54 mark and then Jenny Everett tipped a Jemima Cameron pass into the cage with 6:57 to play in the first half.

But the Cavaliers stormed back, tying the game with just over a minute to play in the half as Coleman converted a corner. Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Mason White (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) were credited with assists on the play.

The Demon Deacons went ahead for good as Cameron scored off a penalty corner with just under 14 minutes to play in the second half. Maria Whitehead tipped her stickstop to Cameron, who shot the ball into the cage for a 3-2 lead that would hold up.

The game was the Cavaliers’ final regular-season game at home in 2000. The fourth-year class of Julia Richardson (Atlanta, Ga./Stone Ridge), Kristy Sott (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), Vizzuso, and Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) were honored in a ceremony following the game.

The Cavaliers travel to Duke on Friday, Oct 27, to face the Blue Devils and then take on the Elis of Yale on Saturday. Game time against the Blue Devils is 3:00.
