CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Virginia women’s soccer team gave the fifth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels all they could handle Saturday night (Ov. 19) in the third round of the 2000 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championships, before eventually falling, 2-1 in front of 5008 fans at Fetzer Field.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie through 55 minutes, before fourth-year Virginia forward Tracey Lache (Littleton, Colo./ Heritage) sent a shot that beat UNC goalkeeper Jenni Branam and was deflected into the Carolina net by Tar Heels defender Danielle Borgman.

The Cavaliers managed to weather the North Carolina attack for the next 13 minutes, until Jena Klugel found Laurie Shwoy on a corner kick and Shwoy headed the ball past Virginia’s Jodi Clugston (Red Hill, Pa./ Upper Perkiomen). Then, just eight minutes later, UNC forward Meredith Florance gathered the ball at the top of the box after a failed UVa clearance. Florance rifled a shot past Clugston for the game winner.

Clugston faced 26 shots and had 10 saves in the loss.

North Carolina advances to face Connecticut in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. The Tar Heels will host the game at a date and time to be determined. Connecticut defeated fourth-seeded Nebraska Friday night (Nov. 17).
