Virginia Men's And Women's Swimming Teams Extend Lead After Second Day Of Competiton In Cavalier Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined to win 11 events in the second day of competition of the 2000 Cavalier Invitational Friday (December 1) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The UVa women won seven of eight events, while the Virginia men captured four victories in seven events. Four Virginia women’s swimmers, fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) and first-years Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School), Cynthia Roller Herndon, Va./Herndon) and Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) all had a hand in a pair of victories. Third-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) was involved in a pair of wins for the UVa men.
The Cavaliers lead the three-day men’s invitational with 955 points after two days, while Yale is a distant second with 463 points. West Chester is third with 376 points and West Virginia is fourth, just four points behind at 372. William & Mary is fifth with 196 points and Central Connecticut is sixth with 140. On the women’s side, Virginia leads the competition with 735 points and Yale is second with 515. West Chester stands third with 439, followed by West Virginia with 428. William & Mary (304) and Central Connecticut (184) round out the field.
In the opening event of the second day of finals, the 200 medley relay, the UVa foursome of Iffland, third-year Caitlin Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield), Roller and third-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) clocked a time of 1:46.90 to earn the victory. Iffland went on to win the 100 backstroke in 56.15. Roller was victorious in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.33 seconds. The Cavaliers also won the final event of the evening, the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:27.46. Second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence), Baly, first-year Jenna Bridges (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) and Dykehouse all swam legs on the winning relay. Baly earned an individual win as well as she touched in 4:17.00 to win the 400 individual medley, while Lane was second in the same event in 4:19.99. Dykehouse also won the 200 freestyle as she turned in a time of 1:49.42 to lead a top three UVa sweep. Bridges and Roesch were second and third with times of 1:50.26 and 1:53.84, respectively. UVa’s final win of the evening came in the three-meter diving as second-year Alison Sharp (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) scored 268.05 points in garnering the victory. West Chester’s Kristen Krail was the only non-UVa swimmer to earn a victory Friday night as she took the top honor in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.08.
In the men’s competition, Mousetis teamed with fourth-year Justin Capuco (Burtonsville, Md./Good Counsel), third-year Matt Lee (Munster, Ind./Munster) and first-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.11. Mousetis went on to win the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.56 seconds. First-years Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) was second to Mousetis in the 100 back in 50.63 seconds. Wagner also teamed with first-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School), fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) and first-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) to win the 800 free relay in a time of 6:40.39. Second-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) won the 400 individual medley in convincing fashion as he posted a time of 3:55.33 seconds, nearly seven seconds ahead of fourth-year teammate Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin). UVa second-years Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) and Mike Wheeler (Lisbon, Md./McDonogh) were third and fourth with times of 4:03.11 and 4:03.20, respectively, to round out a top-four UVa sweep. Other men’s event winners Friday night were Doak Finch in the 100 butterfly (49.49), Central Connecticut’s Dominik Matuzewicz in the 200 free (1:38.72), and West Chester’s Grant Clark in the 100 breaststroke (57.31).
The three-day 2000 Cavalier Invitational concludes on Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 10:00 a.m. and finals taking place at 6:00 p.m.
