GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and first-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s and Men’s Swimmer of the Week, respectively. Both Lane and Anderson turned in outstanding performances as Virginia’s women’s and men’s teams won their own Cavalier Invitational held November 30 through December 2 at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Lane, who won the 1500-meter freestyle at the 2000 NCAA Championships to become Virginia’s first women’s NCAA swimming champion, won three individual events and earned one second-place finish in the Cavalier Invitational. She also swam on two UVa relay teams that posted victories. Lane won the 1650 free with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:15.82 and also met the NCAA “B” standards in the 500 free, 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly. She won the 500 free and 200 fly with times of 4:47.29 and 2:00.30, respectively, and placed second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.99. Lane, the 2000 ACC Swimmer of the Year, was also a member of UVa’s winning 400 free (3:28.36) and 800 free (7:27.46) relay teams.

Anderson had a total of five victories in the three-day Cavalier Invitational. Anderson won the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 20.88 and 45.11, respectively. His time of 45.11 in the 100 free is the best in the ACC this season and his time in the 50 free is also his collegiate best. Anderson also swam a leg on three UVa relay teams that recorded victories. He helped the Cavaliers post winning times in the 200 free (1:23.60), 400 free (3:02.07) and 800 free (6:40.39) relays. Anderson also finished fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.47.

The Virginia men won the six-team Cavalier Invitational with 1,434 points, while the UVa women registered 1,046 points in winning their invitational. Virginia is ranked 11th in Speedo America’s Women’s College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 Poll released on November 30. UVa is also ranked 13th in Speedo America’s Men’s CSCAA Top 25 Poll.
