VIRGINIA'S ZWARICH NAMED VASID CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND TO ALL-REGION TEAM

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) has earned two more honors for her outstanding play in the 2000 season. Zwarich has been selected as the 2000 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Volleyball Co-Player of the Year and has also been named to the 2000 AVCA Division I All-East Region team. In addition to Zwarich, first-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) and first-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) have been selected to the 2000 VaSID Volleyball Second Team.
In addition to sharing the VaSID Co-Player of the Year award with George Mason’s Aline Pereira, Zwarich was named to the six-member 2000 VaSID Volleyball first-team. Earlier this year, Zwarich was selected to the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference first-team as well as the ACC Championship All-Tournament team for her outstanding play. Zwarich, a two-time 2000 ACC Player of the Week pick, became the first UVa volleyball player to be named to the ACC Championship All-Tournament team and the school’s fifth pick overall. Zwarich set an ACC Championship single match kills record in the quarterfinals of the tournament on November 17 when she tallied 33 kills in a 3-1 win over Wake Forest. Her performance broke NC State’s Stephanie Taylor’s 16 year-old record of 32 kills versus Duke in the 1985 tournament.
In the 2000 season, Zwarich broke Virginia’s single match, single season, and career kills records. Zwarich slammed 40 kills against Duke on September 19, to break the former school mark of 31 kills in a match. She also recorded 35 kills against Virginia Tech on October 21 and now holds Virginia’s top three single match kill totals, after her 33-kill effort in the quarterfinals of the 2000 ACC Tournament. On November 4, Zwarich set the Cavaliers’ single season kills record with her 499th kill of the 2000 campaign and concluded the season with 575 kills. Her 575 kills (5.04 per game) led all ACC players. Zwarich became UVa’s career kills leader on November 10 with the 1,466th kill of her career and concludes her stellar career with 1,528 kills. She was second in the ACC with 139 blocks and ranks fourth on Virginia’s career blocks list with 456. Zwarich hit .277 in the 2000 season and also totaled 188 digs and 16 service aces.
Davis, 5-11, is one of two Cavaliers named to the VaSID second-team. She was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team, UVa’s first selection since 1997 when Zwarich and Andrea Fischer were both named to the rookie team. Davis finished the 2000 season second on the team in both kills (410) and digs (396). Davis registered 21 double-doubles in kills and digs during season, including a streak of 13 consecutive double-doubles from September 23 through October 28. She also contributed 62 blocks and 21 service aces in 2000.
Whittenburg, 5-8, joins Davis on the VaSID second-team. She was UVa’s starting setter in 2000 and led the team with 1,337 assists (11.24 per game), the second highest single season total by a Virginia first-year and seventh-best overall. Whittenburg set the school record for block assists in a match with 12 vs. Liberty (October 10) and tied for second on the team with 73 blocks during the season. She also contributed 243 digs and 13 service aces.
Virginia concluded the 2000 season with a 16-15 overall record, marking a school record fifth-consecutive season that UVa has posted a winning record. The Cavaliers were also 8-8 mark in the ACC and advanced to the ACC Championship semifinals for the third straight season.
