CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team will host Wake Forest and Florida State Friday and Saturday, respectively, in the first weekend of Atlantic Coast Conference play. UVa plays the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest on Friday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. in University Hall and then on Saturday, the `Hoos host Florida State at 7:30 p.m.

Sixth-year head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton’s Virginia squad is 5-6 overall entering the weekend. The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-2 (15-7, 7-15, 13-15, 15-12, 15-13) victory over Duke in both teams’ ACC opener on Tuesday, September 19 at University Hall. The win snapped UVa’s four-match losing streak.

Wake Forest begins weekend play with the ACC’s best record at 8-1 overall and the Demon Deacons also opened conference play with a 3-1 win over Maryland on September 19. The Seminoles are also off to a great start in 2000 with an impressive 11-2 record. Florida State opens ACC play at Maryland on Friday, September 22 before traveling to Charlottesville.

Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) led the `Hoos to the victory over Duke with a school record 40 kills, nine more than Greta Jansson’s previous mark of 31 set in the 1991 season. Her 40 kills are a NCAA Division I high in the 2000 season. On the year, Zwarich has tallied a team-high 181 kills for an average of 4.53 per game and also leads the team with 51 blocks. Zwarich has been named to the all-tournament team in the three tournaments UVa has participated in this season. Outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake), a member of UVa’s first-year class that was ranked as the sixth best 2000 recruiting class in the nation by Volleyball Magazine, is second on the team in kills with 132 for an average of 3.3 per game. Davis also tops the squad in digs with 138 (3.45 per game). Another first-year Abby Whittenburg (Amarilo, Texas/Amarillo) has emerged as the Cavaliers’ starting setter. Whittenburg has totaled 398 assists on the season for an average of 10.21 per game.
