CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team split a doubleheader with the Seton Hall Pirates this afternoon at the UVa Baseball Field. The Cavaliers lost the first game by the score of 9-4 before rebounding to pull out a 2-1 victory in the second contest.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Seton Hall jumped out to a 9-0 lead after scoring two runs in the second, third and fourth innings before tallying three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. SHU’s Chris Carter put the Pirates on the scoreboard first and started Seton Hall’s scoring run when he hit a two-run home run over left field in the second inning to make it a 2-0 game.

Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, UVa scored its first run of the game when Mark Rueffert (1-4, RBI, run) hit a solo home run to make it a 9-1 game. The Cavaliers cut the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when David Stone (3-5, two doubles, RBI) scored Chris Sweet (2-4, RBI, run) on an RBI-double to left center field. Virginia scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Dan Street (1-4, RBI, run) scored Hunter Wyant (1-5, double, run) on a fielder’s choice before Street scored on an RBI-single to left field by Sweet, making it a 9-4 contest. But that would be all the scoring UVa would record, as Seton Hall held on for the five-run victory.

SHU’s B.J. Benik (1-0) was the winning pitcher after throwing 7.0 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits with a game-high eight strikeouts. Brandon Creswell (2-1) was handed his first loss of the season after throwing 5.0 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with a team-high three strikeouts.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Virginia scored the first run of the contest when Stone (1-4) hit an RBI-single to score Eric Christensen (1-3, run) in the bottom of the third inning. Seton Hall tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Mike Bascom walked and eventually scored on a throwing error by UVa catcher Andrew Riesenfeld (1-3, RBI). But Riesenfeld made up for his error in a big way, as he recorded the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning when he smacked an RBI-double to left-center field to score Rueffert (2-4, run). Rueffert’s run turned out to be the game-winning run as the Cavaliers held on for the 2-1 victory.

UVa’s Joseph Koshansky (2-0) pitched a complete game after throwing 9.0 innings and allowing only one run (unearned) on seven hits with a game-high four strikeouts. SHU’s Isaac Pavlik (0-2) was dealt the loss despite pitching 7.0 strong innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

With the split of the doubleheader, Virginia’s record moves to 7-4 overall, while the loss makes Seton Hall’s record 1-4 on the season. The two teams are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, March 4th to play the final game of the three-game series. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at the UVa Baseball Field.
