CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team swept a doubleheader from Ohio University, 4-0 and 7-4, Saturday (March 3) in the second day of competition of the 2001 UVa Cavalier Classic at The Park. With the two victories, the Cavaliers improve to 8-6 on the season and 4-0 in the tournament. In the first doubleheader Saturday, Drexel and Rutgers split a pair of games with the Scarlet Knights winning the first game 1-0 and Drexel taking the second 4-0.
Through two days of the three-day tournament, Virginia is undefeated with a 4-0 record, while Ohio is 2-2. Rutgers and Drexel are both 1-3.
In UVa’s first game Saturday, first-year pitcher Jessica Edwards (Santa Ana, Calif./Orange Lutheran) tossed a three-hit shutout as the Cavaliers registered a 4-0 victory. Edwards struck out 10 batters and walked three in improving her record to 3-2. Third-year first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) went two for three in the game with an RBI and a run scored. UVa scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the second inning when second-year catcher Britt Gore (Vienna, Va./James Madison) doubled to score first-year designated player Joanna Barstad (Canby, Ore./Canby), who had singled to center earlier in the inning.
In the nightcap, Virginia posted a 7-4 victory with Dennis earning her second win of the season. Dennis allowed five hits and four unearned runs while striking out 10 batters with no walks. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Ohio (8-8) scored four unearned runs on three UVa errors in the fifth inning to knot the game at 4-4. Fourth-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) broke the tie with a two-run triple down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning. Young went two for three in the game with two RBI and three runs scored. Second-year second baseman Jill Bumler (Montclair, Va./Bishop O’Connell) drove in a pair of runs with a single and a sacrifice fly.
In the first doubleheader, Rutgers (1-3) scored the lone run of the game in the top of the seventh inning to post a 1-0 victory over Drexel (2-6). Dana Komar doubled to lead off the top of the seventh and scored on Brittney Neer’s single. Leah Black tossed a four-hit shutout to pick up the win on the mound for Rutgers. The Dragons earned a split in the doubleheader with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap. Lori Swanson earned the victory for Drexel with a four-hit shutout. She struck out eight batters and walked just one. Kristy Heyser scored a pair of runs for Drexel and drove in another.
The 2001 UVa Cavalier Classic will conclude tomorrow (Sunday), weather permitting, with a pair of doubleheaders. Drexel and Ohio are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow morning beginning at 9:00 a.m., while Virginia and Rutgers will square off in a twinbill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
