Virginia Men's Soccer Player Kyle Martino Named ACC Player of the Week

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – For the second time this season, University of Virginia men’s soccer player Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. He claimed the honor after leading the Cavaliers to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Clemson Tigers on October 13th in Charlottesville.

Martino, a junior midfielder, scored two goals (four points) to lead Virginia to a 2-0 win over Clemson. The victory was UVa’s seventh consecutive shutout victory of the year. The Cavaliers are now 10-0-1 overall, 4-0-0 in the ACC and are the only unbeaten team in the conference.

For the season, Martino has started all 11 games he has appeared in and has recorded a team-high 17 points resulting from seven assists and five goals (two game-winners). Aside from leading the team in points scored this year, Martino’s seven assists and five goals are also team-high figures. He has already tied his career-high for assists in a single season with seven after posting seven assists in 1999. Martino’s totals of 17 points, seven assists, five goals and two game-winning goals scored this year already surpasses his final season figures in each category from last season (2000) when he finished with 14 points, six assists, four goals and one game-winning goal scored.

For his career, Martino has scored 52 points, 20 assists, 16 goals and six game-winning goals through 56 games played and 4,499 minutes of action.

Martino was also named the ACC Player of the Week on September 10th when he scored one goal and added four assists in two games at the 2001 Maryland/FILA Classic. His six points helped lead Virginia to a 4-2 win over American (September 7th) and a 3-2 victory over No. 11 Creighton (September 9th).
