#2 Virginia Men's Soccer Defeats Duke in Overtime, 1-0

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team snapped the Duke Blue Devils’ three-game winning streak when Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) bounced a shot by Blue Devil goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge (Tampa, Fla.) less than two minutes into overtime to keep the second ranked Virginia Cavaliers undefeated on the season with a 1-0 victory.

The Cavaliers’ Eskandarian scored the game-winning goal at 91:49 when teammate Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) connected with him on a cross that resulted in his team-high seventh goal of the season (fourth game-winning goal this year).

Duke was outshot by Virginia 11-8 in the match, but made several key defensive plays to force the overtime session. With 33:30 remaining in regulation, Duke sophomore Matt Ahumada (Scottsdale, Ariz.) made a sliding kick-save on a Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) shot just before it crossed the plain of the open Blue Devil goal.

Duke’s defense came up big again with 3:59 remaining in the second stanza when Trowbridge, a second half substitution for the injured Scott Maslin (New City, N.Y.), registered a diving save ten yards from the goal.

The Blue Devils’ Maslin played the first 60:04 collecting four saves, while Trowbridge tallied two stops during the remainder of the contest in the loss. Virginia goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) recorded two saves and watched two Duke shots bounce off the goal posts in the win.

With the victory, UVa improves to 12-0-1 overall 5-0-0 in the ACC. The loss drops Duke’s record to 7-6-0 overall, 2-2-0 in the conference. The Cavaliers now lead the all-time series with the Blue Devils, 31-30-7.

Virginia will return to home action on Wednesday, October 24th it hosts the East Carolina Pirates. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Kl?ckner Stadium. Duke returns to action on Friday, October 26 when it host UNC-Greensboro at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Big Four Tournament. North Carolina State and Charlotte kick off the classic at 5:00 p.m. The Big Four Tournament comes to a close on Sunday, October 28 with UNC-Greensboro versus N.C. State at 1:00 p.m. and Duke versus Charlotte at 3:30 p.m.
