Virginia’s Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made nine saves to help stem the Maryland attack, but the Terrapins still put four goals on the board to defeat the Cavaliers 4-1 tonight in ACC semifinal action. Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) were responsible for the lone Cavalier goal, which came late in the second half.

Maryland’s first flurry, which came in the first five minutes, was thwarted by White and the rest of the Virginia defense. In the course of a penalty corner for the Terps, a Cavalier defender stopped the ball from going into the cage with her body, resulting in a penalty stroke for Maryland. The Terps’ Autumn Welsh stepped up to the strokemark and her attempt was stonewalled by White, keeping the Terps off the scoreboard.

Maryland, however, was able to get on the board three times in the first half as Megan Kelly, Colleen Barbieri, and Carissa Messimer all tallied goals for the Terps.

Midway through the second half the Terps earned another penalty stroke, and this time Welsh was successful, putting Maryland up 4-0 with 16:29 to play.

With just under six minutes remaining, the Terrapins had a free hit on the Virginia 20-yard line. A Maryland foul turned the free hit over to the Cavaliers, and on the quick reset Goodloe sent the ball up the field. A Maryland stick was angled back and the ball was tipped downfield. Coleman outraced Sara Silvetti to the ball, drew Maryland’s Kerry Hearsey out of the cage and deposited the ball into the boards to get the Cavaliers in the scoring column.

The loss drops the Cavaliers to 13-7 and we now await a bid from the NCAA Tournament. Bids will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 6pm. The first-round games will take place at selected sites on Saturday, Nov. 10.
