CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Seton Hall Pirates upset the #2 seeded Virginia Cavaliers by the score of 1-0 in the second round of the 2001 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship in front of 1,378 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium this afternoon. Seton Hall’s Phil Swenda scored the game-winning goal for the Pirates just 6:24 into the match to lift SHU to an upset victory over UVa.

Seton Hall’s game-winning score was set up by midfielder Ingo Dittel. Dittel gathered the ball out in the left flank and played a cross to Swenda who was lurking near the top corner of the box. Swenda gathered Dittel’s feed and trickled a shot past Virginia goalkeeper David Comfort that slowly rolled into the UVa goal. The goal proved to be all the scoring the Pirates would need to secure their second win of the tournament. Despite being outshot by UVa 23-10, Seton Hall prevailed with solid defense and several key stops by its goalkeeper Efren Aquirre (nine saves) to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard.

With the victory, Seton Hall’s record improves to 12-6-2 overall, while the loss drops Virginia’s record to 17-2-1 on the year. The defeat eliminates UVa from the tournament and ends the Cavaliers season. The Pirates improve to 1-3-0 all-time against Virginia in the series history after gathering their first win against the Cavaliers. The loss was UVa’s first defeat at home and its first loss by shutout at home since dropping a 3-0 decision to the Creighton Bluejays on December 2, 2000 in the Quarterfinals of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.

After defeating Coastal Carolina by the score of 2-1 (November 23rd) in the first round and now Virginia 1-0 in the second round of the tournament, Seton Hall will advance to the third round of the 2001 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship (December 1-2) to face the winner of the Fairleigh Dickinson vs. Princeton match.
