CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team is ranked 11th in both The Associated Press and the USA Today/ESPN preseason polls.

Virginia’s preseason ranking in The Associated Press poll is the highest for the Cavaliers in that poll since they were ranked number one prior to the start of the 1982-83 season. UVa was ranked 24th in last year’s Associated Press preseason poll and finished the season ranked 16th.

Virginia was ranked 25th in last year’s USA Today/ESPN preseason poll and finished the season ranked 21st.

The Cavaliers have four starters returning from last year’s 20-9 team that participated in the NCAA Tournament.

UVa defeated the Nantucket Nectars 82-70 in an exhibition game on November 2. Virginia plays its final exhibition game of the 2001-02 preseason practice period on Sunday (Nov. 11) when the Cavaliers host the Los Angeles Stars at University Hall. That game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.

Virginia opens its 2001-02 season with a game at home against Wagner College on November 16. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
