UVa's Amy Baly Places Fifth In 400 Individual Medley At Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. – Virginia second-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) finished fifth in the 400-meter individual medley at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Swimming Championships Thursday (August 16). In addition, second-year sprint freestyler Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) was named to the United States’ 2001 Goodwill Games team, joining second-year Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) on the team. The Goodwill Games will take place in Brisbane, Australia, August 29-September 3.

Baly took fifth place in the finals 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:49.34. She was also fifth in the preliminaries by touching in a time of 4:50.89.

In the 200-meter freestyle, second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) finished in 1:52.51 to place 14th. Prichard clocked a time of 1:52.55 in the prelims. Anderson was 27th in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:53.52. Second-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) was 40th in the 200 free in 1:54.24. In the men’s 400-meter individual medley, third-year Michael Wheeler (Lisbon, Md./McDonogh) posted a time of 4:36.38 to finish 22nd. Wheeler recorded a time of 4:36.69 in the preliminaries.

In the women’s 200-meter freestyle, second-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) finished 26th with a time of 2:05.65.

The Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships continue through August 18.
