BEIJING, China – University of Virginia guard Roger Mason, Jr., scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds to help the USA team to a 112-50 victory over Iran in its first game of the preliminary round at the World University Games on Wednesday (Aug. 22).

Mason, who is from Silver Spring, Md., was in the starting line-up for the USA and hit a three-point basket on the team’s first possession after winning the opening tip. He made three of eight shots from the field, including one of four from three-point range, and had three turnovers in 12 minutes of action.

Mason will be a junior at Virginia this fall.

All 12 players on the USA team scored in the game. Lonny Baxter and Juan Dixon of Maryland combined for 47 points. Baxter scored 27 points and had nine rebounds, while Dixon scored 20 points and had four assists. Lynn Greer of Temple added 11 points.

The next preliminary round game for the USA team is against South Africa on Thursday (August 23).
