Mason Scores Nine Points In USA Victory Over South Korea

BEIJING, China – University of Virginia guard Roger Mason, Jr., scored nine points and grabbed two rebounds to help the USA team to a 128-97 victory over South Korea on Tuesday (Aug. 28) in the team’s final game of the quarterfinal round at the World University Games. The victory improves the USA team’s record to 6-0, while South Korea is now 1-4.

The USA advances to a semifinal game with China on Thursday (Aug. 30).

Mason, who is from Silver Spring, Md., has started all six games for the USA team. He made four of five shots from the field and was one for four from the free throw line against South Korea. He also had two assists, two steals, one blocked shot and two turnovers in 22 minutes of action.

Mason will be a junior at Virginia this fall.

Chris Owens (Texas) led six USA players in double figures with 32 points and he also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. The 32 points are the most scored by a USA player in World University Games competition. Melvin Ely (Fresno State) scored 15 points, Antwain Barbour (Wabash Valley Community College) had 14, Juan Dixon (Maryland) and Lonny Baxter (Maryland) each scored 12 points, and Dan Dickau (Gonzaga) added 10 points.
