CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team lost to Georgetown 3-1 (30-32, 30-26, 27-30, 28-30) Saturday (September 7) in the final match of the 2002 Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament at University Hall. With the victory, the Hoyas won the tournament title with a perfect 3-0 record. In the first match of the evening session of the tournament, the College of Charleston defeated William & Mary 3-0 (30-22, 30-16, 30-20). UVa falls to 3-4 on the season.

Georgetown’s Anna Kleinsorge was named the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament Most Valuable Player. Her teammates Sara Albert and Julie Grauert were named to the All-Tournament team. Also selected to the All-Tournament team were UVa third-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake), the College of Charleston’s Stephanie Ballard and Tara Greene, and William & Mary’s Amy Owens.

The College of Charleston (3-3) concludes the tournament in second place with a 2-1 record, while Virginia was third with a mark of 1-2. William & Mary (2-5) finished fourth with a mark of 0-3.

In their match against Georgetown (4-2), Davis recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs and also added three service aces. Second-year outside hitter Celeste Laborde (New Orleans, La./Academy of the Sacred Heart) tallied 12 kills and six digs, while fourth-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Gershaw) notched 10 kills, eight blocks and six digs. First-year setter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) recorded her first career double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs. Third-year rightside hitter Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) equaled Kuipers for match-high honors in blocks with eight, while third-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) led UVa with 15 digs. Fourth-year rightside hitter Kiersten Kaufman served up six aces to tie for the fourth most in a match all-time at Virginia.

Lauren Warner recorded a double-double for the Hoyas with 14 kills and 17 digs, while Kleinsorge and Albert both notched 11 kills. Grauert also had 17 digs, while Margaret Vernon had 28 assists. Rachel Nelson added nine kills and 12 digs.

The Trio of Tara Greene, Shawn Beckham and Stephanie Ballard led the College of Charleston to its 3-0 win over William & Mary. Greene registered a double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs and added three blocks. Beckham notched 13 kills and a .462 hitting percentage, while Ballard posted 11 kills and nine digs. Setter Mark Sabatino dished out 47 assists and added five kills. As a team, the Cougars hit .342 in the match and held a 58-24 advantage in kills.

Katherine Lewis led the Tribe with eight kills, while Kate Woffindin totaled nine digs, five kills, and four blocks.

In Saturday’s morning session, Virginia defeated William & Mary 3-0 and Georgetown posted a 3-0 win over the College of Charleston.

The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, September 10 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., for a 7:00 p.m. match at Virginia Tech.
