Virginia Men's and Women's Swimming Teams Down N.C. State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams coasted to easy victories over Atlantic Coast Conference rival N.C. State Saturday (January 12) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 11th-ranked Cavalier men won 196-92 to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, while the 14th-ranked Virginia women posted a 178-110 victory over the Wolfpack to increase its record to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.
The UVa men won 13 of the first 14 events before exhibitioning the final two events of the meet. Virginia had a trio of double individual event winners. Third-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) won the 100 breast in 58.60 and the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.03. Second-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) won the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50 free in 21.10 and the 100 free in 46.34. Second-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) swept the one and three-meter diving competitions. He scored 282.08 points in winning the one-meter board and earned the sweep with 295.13 points in the three-meter competition. Third-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) outdistanced the field in winning the 1000 free with a time of 9:21.82, while second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) touched in 1:39.91 to win the 200 freestyle. The Cavaliers swept the freestyle events when second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) won the 500 free in 4:32.79. Second-year Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) led a top-three UVa sweep in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.28. Virginia also swept the butterfly events with third-year Brian Best (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) winning the 100 fly (50.54) and first-year Michael Raab (Rockville, M.d./Walter Johnson) winning the 200 fly (1:49.19). The Cavaliers also won the meet-opening 200 medley relay in a time of 1:33.79. First-year Chad Barlow (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy), Anderson, Best and second-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) each swam legs on the winning relay. N.C. State, which fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, got its first victory in the meet in the 200 breaststroke as Rob Yeager posted a winning time of 2:06.77.
The Virginia women won 10 of the first 14 events before exhibitioning the final two in posting a 178-110 victory over the Wolfpack (2-3, 1-2 ACC). Fourth-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), third-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and second-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) each won a pair of individual events for Virginia. Roesch won the 50 free in 23.74 seconds and earned a sweep in the sprint freestyle events by posting a time of 51.79 seconds in the 100 free. Lane swept the distance free events as she won the 1000 free with a time of 9:50.91 and took the 500 free with a NCAA “B” qualifying time of 4:54.06. Dykehouse helped the Cavaliers sweep the freestyle events as she won the 200 free with a time of 1:51.32. Dykehouse earned her second win of the meet in the 100 butterfly as she touched in 57.28 seconds. Third-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) clocked a NCAA “B” qualifying time in winning the 200 butterfly in 2:03.35. Fourth-year Caitlin Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s) and second-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) rounded out UVa’s individual event winners. Anderson won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.04, while Baly took the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:23.22. Virginia also won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:47.50. Third-year Lindsey Crane (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led off the relay, followed by Anderson, first-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep), and Roesch.
N.C. State’s Erin Bailey swept the one and three-meter diving competitions. Bailey scored 269.25 points in winning the one-meter competition and tallied 253.20 points in taking the top spot on the three-meter board. The Wolfpack also swept the backstroke events. Erika Newell was victorious in the 100 back (58.56), while Annamaria Gazda won the 200 back (2:04.71).
The Cavaliers return to action on Friday, January 18 when both squads travel to Durham, N.C. for a 5:00 p.m. meet against Duke.
