Nine Virginia Freshmen Honored by The Sporting News

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Virginia football players dominate The Sporting News’ 2002 ACC All-Freshman Team, which was announced on Monday.
Nine Cavaliers were honored by the magazine, including linebacker Darryl Blackstock (Newport News, Va.) who was named the ACC Defensive Freshman of the Year.
Tight end Heath Miller (Swords Creek, Va.), tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson (Freeport, N.Y.), guard Brian Barthelmes (Garrettsville, Ohio), and running back Wali Lundy (Willingboro, N.J.) earned offensive honors.
Joining Blackstock on the defensive team were defensive ends Brennan Schmidt (Arlington, Va.) and Kwakou Robinson (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
Kicker Kurt Smith (Lookout Mountain, Ga.) and punter Tom Hagan (Roanoke, Va.) earned specialist recognition.
Virginia (8-5, 6-2 ACC) will face West Virginia (9-3, 6-1 Big East) in the Continental Tire Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
