COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Virginia women’s swimming and diving team stands in third place with 181 points after the first day of competition at the 23rd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday (February 21) at the University of Maryland Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. Third-year All-American swimmers Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) led the Cavaliers by winning the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley, respectively.

Defending ACC champion North Carolina leads after six events with 204 points, while Florida State is second with 195 points. Virginia is third with 181 points and Clemson is fourth with 114. Rounding out the field is N.C. State (99), Maryland (94), Duke (87) and Georgia Tech (74).

Lane, a two-time ACC Swimmer of the Year, won her third consecutive ACC championship in the 500 freestyle as she set new ACC, conference meet and Maryland pool records with a time of 4:42.35. Lane and second-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep), who finished second with a time of 4:44.55, both automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Lane has now won seven individual ACC titles in as many attempts during her career. Second-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) was fourth in the 500 free as she touched in 4:49.07, while first-year teammates Kate Wrenshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bolles School) and Laura Lipskis (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) were seventh and eighth with times of 4:52.31 and 4:56.56, respectively. Baly and Wrenshall bettered the NCAA “B” standard.

After earning runnerup honors in the 200 individual medley last year, Bosevska set new ACC, conference meet and pool records in the 200 I.M. with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:59.31. Her time also shattered her own school record time of 2:00.59.

In the 50 freestyle, fourth-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) earned All-ACC honors by finishing third with an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 22.92. First-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) was seventh in the 50 free with an NCAA “B” time of 23.16. Third-year Alison Sharp (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) was sixth in the one-meter diving competition with 258.85 points.

UVa was second in the 200 freestyle relay with an NCAA “B” time of 1:31.64, just 25 hundredths of a second behind Clemson (1:31.39). Georoff, first-year Carrie Ellis (Valrico, Fla./Durant), third-year Lindsey Crane (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Roesch all swam legs on the second-place relay. In the 400 medley relay, the Cavaliers were disqualified.

North Carolina’s Christy Watkins won the 50 free with a ACC, meet and pool record time of 22.45. Florida State’s Courtney McClow led a top four Seminole sweep in the one-meter diving competition with 289.25 points. Florida State also won the 400 medley relay (3:42.00), while Clemson won the 200 free relay (1:31.39).

The UVa women continue competition in the 2002 ACC Championships Friday (February 22). Preliminaries begin at 11:00 a.m. and finals commence at 7:00 p.m.
