Men's Golf Ties for 13th at Puerto Rico Classic

PALMER, PUERTO RICO – The University of Virginia men’s golf team finished in a tie for 13th place at the Puerto Rico Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at the Rio Mar River Course in Palmer, Puerto Rico.

ACC rival Georgia Tech dominated the field of 15 over the three-day event to take the team title at 35-under (829). Clemson followed at 10-under with a 854. Host Purdue was third at seven-under with a 857.

Virginia, which shot a 311 in the final round, tied with Kent State and Northwestern at 13th with a 913 (+49) after 54 holes.

Individually, Georgia Tech’s Tory Matteson captured medalist honors with an 11-under 205 to lead the field of 78. Purdue’s Lee Williamson followed by two strokes at 207 (-9). Georgia Tech’s Nicholas Thompson was third with a 210 (-6).

Senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) paced Virginia with a 223 (+7) after shooting a 73 in the final round. He tied for 37th overall. Sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) placed 54th with a 229 (+13). Junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot a 231 (+15) to tie for 56th.

Virginia takes to the links again on March 11-12 at the Seminole Collegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
