Virginia Increases Lead After Second Day Of Men's ACC Swimming & Diving Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Virginia men’s swimming and diving team won five of seven events Friday (March 1) to stretch its lead to 191.5 points after two days of competition in the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Maryland Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. The Cavaliers have won 10 of 13 events and have scored 578 points as they look to earn their fourth consecutive ACC title.
Virginia, the three-time defending champions leads after 13 of 20 events with 578 points with Georgia Tech a distant second with 386.5 points. North Carolina is third 316.5 points, while Florida State (259) and Clemson (255) are fourth and fifth. Rounding out the field is Maryland (181), N.C. State (162) and Duke (58).
The Cavaliers won four individual events and one relay during the second day of competition. After setting school, ACC, conference meet and pool records in winning the 200 individual medley Thursday night, first-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) broke the same four records in winning the 400 individual medley with an impressive NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:44.99. Greenwood’s time bettered current UVa head assistant coach Bill Smyth’s ACC and school record of 3:47.98 by three seconds. Third-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) earned All-ACC honors with a third-place performance in the 400 I.M. with a time of 3:52.91.
Second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) also continued his dominance in the freestyle events as he won the 200 free with a pool record time of 1:36.57. Anderson, who won the 50 free Thursday night, led a top three Virginia sweep in the 200 free. Second-years Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) and Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) tied for second with a time of 1:37.20. Kerpelman briefly held the Maryland pool record in the 200 free with his time of 1:36.77 in the preliminaries.
Second-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) successfully defended his title in the 100 breaststroke as he clocked an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.76. Third-year Jon Baird (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) touched in 54.57 to take third place and earn All-ACC honors.
Virginia also put on a dominating performance in the 100 backstroke with a top three sweep, as well as a sixth-place finish. Second-year Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) earned the ACC title with a time of 48.67. Second-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was the runner-up with a time of 48.92, while first-year Chad Barlow (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) placed third with a time of 49.58 to round out UVa’s All-ACC performers in the event. Fourth-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) was sixth in the 100 back in a time of 49.87.
In the final event of the night, UVa won the 800 free relay with a pool record time of 6:31.58. Wagner, Kerpelman, Anderson and Prichard each swam legs on the winning relay that touched nearly five seconds ahead of Georgia Tech.
The UVa men conclude competition in the 2002 ACC Championships Saturday (March 2). Preliminaries begin at 11:00 a.m. and finals commence at 7:00 p.m.
