Virginia's Lane And Bosevska Earn First Team All-America Honors At Women's NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Virginia third-year swimmers Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) earned first-team All-America Thursday (March 21) at the 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas. Lane was fourth in the 500 freestyle, while Bosevska was seventh in the 200 individual medley. The Cavaliers also finished eighth in the 200 freestyle relay for their third first-team All-America honor during the first day of competition at the 2002 NCAAs.
After six of 21 events, Virginia has scored 55 points and is tied with Florida for eighth place. Auburn leads the 2002 NCAAs with 153 points, while Georgia is second with 127 points.
Lane earned first-team All-America honors for the second consecutive year in the 500 freestyle as she posted a time of 4:42.40 after clocking a time of 4:42.68 in the prelims earlier in the day. Lane was also a first-team All-American in the 400-meter freestyle in 2000. Bosevska became the first UVa women’s swimmer to earn first-team All-American honors in the 200 individual medley with her seventh place finish. Bosevska clocked a time of 1:59.40 in the finals after registering a time of 1:59.64 in the preliminaries.
The Virginia foursome of first-years Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) and Carrie Ellis (Valrico, Fla./Durant), third-year Lindsey Crane (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and fourth-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) finished eighth in the championship final of the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.46 to earn first-team All-America honors. The same four swimmers set the school record in the 200 free relay in the prelims with a time of 1:30.98.
Georoff and Roesch captured honorable mention All-America accolades in the 50 free with 14th and 15th place finishes, respectively. Georoff finished one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Roesch with a time of 23.04 seconds. Roesch posted a time of 23.05 in finals after notching a personal best time of 22.83 seconds in the prelims. Georoff set a personal-best time of 22.87 seconds in the 50 free with her leadoff split on UVa’s 200 free relay in the preliminaries. Second-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) was the final Cavalier to earn All-American honors Thursday evening. She finished 16th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.39 for honorable mention All-America accolades. Baly touched in 4:46.20 in the prelims.
Several other Cavaliers competed in the preliminaries Thursday. Second-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) was 28th in the 500 free in a time of 4:48.31. First-years Laura Lipskis (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Katie McWilliams (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) were 47th and 48th in the 500 with a times of 4:52.77 and 4:53.18, respectively.
The 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continue Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. Central Time with day two preliminaries. Friday night finals begin at 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
