Virgnia's Bosevska Shatters School Record In Finishing Third In The 400 I.M. At The Women's NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Virginia third-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) destroyed her own school record in finishing third in the championship final of the 400 individual medley Friday night (March 22) at the 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Bosevska clocked a time of 4:09.75 in taking third place and earning first-team All-American honors. UVa also placed 10th in the 800 free relay to earn honorable mention All-American accolades. The NCAA Championships are being held at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas.
After 14 of 21 events, Virginia has scored 86 points and stands in 12th place. Auburn leads the 2002 NCAAs with 337 points, while Georgia is second with 270 points.
Bosevska broke her own school record in the 400 I.M. during the preliminaries Friday with a time of 4:11.41. Bosevska’s time of 4:09.75 in the finals shaved 1.66 seconds of her own school record and also established a new Atlantic Coast Conference record. North Carolina’s Polly Winde held the ACC’s 400 I.M. record with a time of 4:11.32 set in 1984. It marks the third consecutive year Bosevska has garnered first-team All-America honors in the 400 I.M. She also finished seventh in the 200 I.M. Thursday with a time of 1:59.40 to earn first-team All-America accolades.
In the evening’s final event, the 800 freestyle relay, the Cavaliers turned in a time of 7:16.57 to finish 10th. The foursome of first-year Laura Lipskis (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), Bosevska, third-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and second-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) were named honorable mention All-Americans with their finish.
After finishing 13th in the prelims of the 400 individual medley (4:16.31), second-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) posted a time of 4:19.11 in the consolation finals to finish 16th overall and earn honorable mention All-American honors.
Virginia had several other swimmers compete in prelims Friday. In the 200 freestyle, Dykehouse was 36th with a time of 1:49.35, while Lipskis placed 38th in 1:49.48. First-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) competed in the 100 butterfly and turned in a time of 55.52 to finish in 38th place.
The third and final day of competition of the 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships gets under way Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Central Time with preliminaries. Saturday’s finals begin at 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
