Virginia's Lane Finishes Third In 1650 Freestyle At The Women's NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Virginia third-year swimmer Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) finished third in the 1650 freestyle Saturday night (March 23) at the 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships to earn first-team All-America honors in the mile for the third-consecutive year. UVa also garnered honorable mention All-America accolades in the 400 freestyle relay with a 10th place time of 3:19.81 that broke the school and pool records. The Cavaliers finished 12th in the team standings of the 2002 NCAA Championships, which were held at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas.
Virginia, the top finisher among ACC schools, scored 125 points to place 12th at the NCAAs for the second consecutive year. It is also the fourth straight year the Cavaliers have finished in the top 12 at the NCAA Championships. Auburn won the 2002 NCAA title with 474 points, while Georgia was second with 386 points. Stanford (301) edged Southern Cal (300.5) for third place and Arizona (291) rounded out the top five teams.
Lane, the NCAA champion in the mile in 2000 and 2001, finished third with a time of 16:04.54. SMU freshman Flavia Rigamonti won the 1650 free title with a time of 15:52.28, while Florida sophomore Janelle Atkinson was second in 16:01.01. Second-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) captured honorable mention All-America accolades in the 1650 free for the second consecutive year with a ninth place time of 16:20.16.
In the final event of the 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, Virginia placed 10th in the 400 freestyle relay with a school and ACC record time of 3:19.81. The former school and ACC record was 3:20.09 set by UVa in 1999. Virginia was 10th in the preliminaries in 3:20.54. The foursome of fourth-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), first-years Carrie Ellis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) and Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) and second-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) garnered honorable mention All-American accolades with their performance in the 400 free relay.
Virginia had several other swimmers compete in prelims Saturday. In the 200 butterfly, third-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) just missed advancing to the consolation finals as she finished 18th with a 1:59.29. Lane was 20th in the 200 fly in 1:59.84, while Dykehouse touched in 2:01.06 to place 32nd. The Cavaliers also had three competitions in the 100 freestyle and all three swam nearly the identical time. Ellis finished 26th with a time of 50.12, while Roesch was right behind Ellis in 27th place with a time of 50.17. Georoff was two one-hundredths of a second behind Roesch with a time of 50.19, good for 28th place.
The Cavaliers had six swimmers earn first-team All-America honors at the 2002 NCAA Championships and nine of 10 UVa swimmers who qualified for the NCAAs earned All-America accolades. Lane and Bosevska are two-time first-team All-Americans in 2002, while Georoff, Ellis, third-year Lindsey Crane (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Roesch earned first-team All-America honors in the 200 freestyle relay.
