Virginia's Anderson Advances To Finals Of 50 Freestyle At NCAA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Virginia second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) finished fifth in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle Thursday (March 28) at the 2002 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia’s Gabrielsen Natatorium to advance to tonight’s finals. Also during first-day prelims, second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) qualified for the consolation final of the 500 freestyle. UVa advanced to the consolation final of the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays as well.
Anderson clocked a time of 19.70, just two hundredths of a second off his school record, to place fifth in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle. Prichard was the only other Cavalier to advance to tonight’s finals session in an individual event as he placed 13th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:20.71 to qualify for the consolation final.
In addition to qualifying for the finals in the 50 free, Anderson helped the Cavaliers qualify for tonight’s consolation final of the 200 free and 400 medley relays. Anderson swam the leadoff leg of UVa’s 200 freestyle relay that placed 14th with a time of 1:19.83. Second-years Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) and Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) swam the other three legs on the Cavaliers’ 200 free relay. Anderson also anchored Virginia’s 400 medley relay that turned in a time of 3:12.89 to finish ninth in the prelims. Wagner, second-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) and first-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) swam the first three legs of the 400 medley relay.
In addition to Prichard’s 13th-place performance in the 500 free, third-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) was 34th in 4:28.07. Kerpelman also competed in the 50 free with Anderson and touched in 20.45 to finish 43rd. In the 200 individual medley, Marshall finished 17th with a time of 1:47.12 and is the first alternate for the consolation final. First-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) clocked a time of 1:47.61 to place 22nd in the 200 I.M.
The first of three final sessions for the 2002 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. Friday’s preliminary events begin at 11:00 a.m.
