ATHENS, Ga. – University of Virginia second-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) finished sixth in the preliminaries of the 100-yard breaststroke Friday (March 29) at the 2002 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia’s Gabrielsen Natatorium to advance to tonight’s finals. Also during the second day of prelims, first-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) placed 10th in the 400 individual medley to advance to this evening’s consolation final.

Marshall, who entered the NCAA Championships as the fourth seed in the 100 breaststroke, posted a time of 53.85 to finish sixth in the preliminaries and advance to the championship final. Greenwood also advanced to the evening session with a 10th place time of 3:47.70 in the 400 individual medley. Greenwood will swim in the consolation final.

The Cavaliers finished 17th in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.13 and are the first alternate for the consolation final. Second-year Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), third-year Jonathan Baird (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy), second-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) and second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) swam legs on the relay.

Baird also competed in the 100 breaststroke and finished 21st with a time of 54.99. Kerpelman and second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) swam the 200 freestyle and finished 29th and 37th, respectively. Kerpelman clocked a time of 1:38.41 for 29th and Prichard was 37th in 1:39.02.

Virginia had two swimmers compete in the 100 backstroke. Second-year Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) touched in 48.17 to tie for 21st place, while Haag was 32nd with a time of 49.77. First-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) rounded out UVa’s competitors in the prelims as he placed 32nd in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.23.

In addition to Marshall and Greenwood competing in tonight’s finals, Virginia will also swim the 800 freestyle relay.

The second of three final sessions for the 2002 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. Saturday’s preliminary events begin at 11:00 a.m.
