Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia men’s lacrosse team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 21-3 win over Butler in a “Senior Day” match-up at Kl?ckner Stadium this afternoon. The Cavaliers move to 10-3 this season, while the Bulldogs end their season at 5-8.

Butler’s Adam Cichostepski opened the scoring 59 seconds into the game by taking a feed from Jason Soporito on the crease and beating goalie Tillman Johnson. Virginia took some time to get its offense going, but A.J. Shannon knotted the score at one with a bouncer past Brendan Winkler at the 10:55 mark of the period. Shannon’s goal was the first of 18 unanswered goals for the Cavaliers as Butler went scoreless until late in the third quarter.

The Cavaliers finished the first quarter by scoring five goals in the final 4:11 to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Conor Gill scored the first of his two goals with 4:11 to go in the opening period to put the Cavaliers ahead for good.

Virginia tacked on seven more goals in the second quarter to take a 13-1 lead at halftime. UVa’s first eight goals were scored by eight different players as nine players scored two-or-more goals on the afternoon.

Matt Eizenberg ended Butler’s scoring drought with 2:16 left in the third quarter with his seventh goal of the season.

Virginia head coach Dom Starsia substituted liberally in the second half as all 32 Cavaliers in uniform played.

Freshman Joe Yevoli led the Virginia offense with three goals. He added three assists to finish with a career-high six points. He has scored 33 goals this season, one shy from Kevin Pehlke’s school record for freshman goals set in 1990. Gill added six assists to go along with his two goals and tied his season high with eight points. Andrew Faraone (2g), Justin Mullen (2g) and Brendan Gill all scored their first goals of the season, while freshmen Nathan Kenney and Jared Little each established career highs with two goals each.

Johnson played the first 41 minutes and recorded five saves before giving way to reserves Ben Roberts (0 saves) and George Greczmiel (2 saves). Butler’s Winkler registered 15 saves before being relieved by Sam Ashley (2 saves) and Mark Forsythe for the final quarter.

The Cavaliers now await a bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Bids will be announced Sunday (May 5).
