UVa's Roesch And Bosevska Earn Verizon District III Academic Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia swimmers Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) have been selected to the CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-District III University Division Women’s At-Large Team. Roesch, a fourth-year, has been named to the first-team and is now eligible for national Verizon Academic All-America honors. Bosevska was named to the second-team. Fifteen student-athletes were named to both the first and second All-District III At-Large teams. The At-Large team includes sports other than volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball and track & field/cross country.
Roesch, a sprint freestyle specialist, was a tri-captain of UVa’s nationally-ranked women’s swimming and diving team that finished 12th at the 2002 NCAA Championships in March. She earned first-team All-America honors as a member of the Cavaliers’ eighth place 200 freestyle relay. Roesch was also an honorable mention All-American in the 50 freestyle (15th place) and 400 freestyle relay (10th place) in 2002. At the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, Roesch garnered All-CC honors with a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle. She was fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 free at the ACC Championships.
Earlier this spring, Roesch was a recipient of the ACC’s 2002 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Award. Roesch, who will graduate Sunday (May 19) with a degree in finance, is a three-time first-team College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-American (1998-1999, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001). She is also a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection. Roesch was the recipient of the team’s 2001-2002 Coaches and Ramirez Family Leadership Awards, as well as Diane Montgomery Greene Award, which is given to the athlete who exemplifies the highest qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and unselfish service in the interest of athletics at UVa.
Bosevska, a third-year, is coming off an outstanding 2001-2002 season. She was named both the ACC Swimmer of the Year and the ACC Meet Most Valuable Swimmer. At the 2002 NCAA Championships, Bosevska was a first-team All-American in the 400 and 200 individual medleys with third and seventh-place finishes, respectively. She set an ACC record in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:09.75 and also holds the school record in the 200 I.M. (1:59.31). Bosevska earned honorable mention All-America accolades with a 10th-place finish in the 800 free relay and was also 18th in the 200 butterfly at the NCAAs. At the ACC Championships, Bosevska won the 200 and 400 individual medleys, the 200 butterfly and was a member of UVa’s winning 800 free relay.
Bosevska, a psychology major, was named UVa’s team MVP this season and was also the recipient of the team’s Hardest Worker Award. The two-time Olympian for Macedonia has twice been selected to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Bosevska, an 11-time All-American, was chosen as UVa’s and the ACC’s Rookie of the Year in 2000.
To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing in his/her career. District III consists of schools from the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
