Virginia Competes At The Head Of The Charles Regatta

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Virginia’s youth eight crew finished sixth in that competition on Sunday (Oct. 20) to highlight the UVa women’s rowing team’s performance at the Head of the Charles Regatta. Virginia crews also finished eighth in the championship four race and 12th in the championship eight competition.
Brown won the youth eight race with a time of 17:59.9 and was the only collegiate crew to finish ahead of the Cavaliers. Virginia finished with a time of 18:29.7. There were 46 crews in the competition.
“They handled difficult windy conditions very well,” Virginia assistant coach Kara McPhillips said of the Cavaliers’ youth eight crew. “They went out aggressively and I’m very pleased with their performance. It was the first head race for some of the rowers and they did an exceptional job.”
The youth eight crew was comprised of coxswain Karen Richardson, Lauren Cruikshank, Kim Maxfield, Lexie Zaborowski, Christina Offutt, Daphne Allen, Crystal MacLeod, Christina Berry and Katie Verhey.
A crew from the London (Ontario) Training Center won the championship four competition with a time of 18:24.8. Washington was the top finishing collegiate crew with a fourth place finish in a time of 19:03.5. Brown finished fifth (19:19.4) followed by Yale (19:21.7), UCLA (19:22.6) and Virginia (19:32.6). There were 33 crews in the race.
“It was a very gutsy race by our crew,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “They powered through a lot of traffic. I told them to be tougher than the other crews and they did a great job of executing those instructions.”
The championship four crew was made up of coxswain Danielle Sewell, Emily Richard, Mary Dobmeier, Amanda Kennedy and Katie Yrazabal.
“We were right behind Cornell for about a mile,” Sewell said. “We took a very aggressive final turn coming through the last bridge and managed to pass them.”
A US Rowing crew won the championship eight with a time of 16:12.9 followed by a crew from the London (Ontario) Training Center (16:16.9) and Yale (16:34.5). A crew from the Princeton Training Center finished fourth (16:35.7) followed by Princeton (16:44.1), Stanford (16:53.1), Northeastern (16:55.9), Ohio State (16:56.7), California-Berkeley (17:00.45), Michigan (17:00.49), Radcliffe (17:01.8) and Virginia (17:03.9). There were 46 crews in the competition.
“Parts of our race were sharp and overall it was a solid race,” Sauer said. “It’s something to build on.”
The championship eight crew was comprised of coxswain Betty Shumaker, Risa Mandzuk, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer, Julie McQueen, Molly Baker, Claudia Durkin, Jen Reck, Carolyn McMillan and Catelyn Coyle.
“The last 800 meters we really stepped things up,” Shumaker said. “The last 800 meters carried us ahead of Boston University.”
The UVa women’s rowing team returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J.
