RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team lost the second game (seven inning contest) of a doubleheader to the #12 ranked Richmond Spiders by the same score it dropped the first contest to the Spiders, 2-1, at UR’s Pitt Field. Richmond took an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play and UVa scored its only run of the game in the top of the second inning to make it a 2-1 game. However, the Spiders hung on for the win thanks to their starting pitcher Mike McGirr for another UR one-run victory.
Trailing for the second time on the afternoon by the score of 2-0, Virginia scored its only run of the game when designated hitter Matt Dunn was hit by a pitch before scoring two batter later on a throwing error by UR’s Ben Zeskind. However, Dunn’s run was not enough as UVa fell for the second time in the doubleheader by the score of 2-1.
Virginia starting pitcher Chris Gale pitched six strong innings and allowed just two runs on five hits with a game-high four strikeouts. The Spiders’ McGirr went seven innings and allowed one run (unearned) on four hits with three strikeouts.
With the loss, Virginia’s record drops to 2-5 overall. The win improves the Spiders’ record to 5-0 on the season.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Tuesday, March 4th when UVa host the James Madison Dukes in Virginia’s home-opener. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
