Virginia Softball Drops Doubleheader To Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Virginia softball lost a pair of games to Coastal Carolina Monday (March 3) at Coastal Stadium. The Cavaliers fell 2-0 in the first game, then lost 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap. With the losses, the Cavaliers fall to 6-8 on the season, while Coastal Carolina improves to 9-1.

In the first game, the Chanticleers scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning in their 2-0 win. Coastal Carolina used three walks and a two-run single to third base to score its two runs.

First-year pitcher Erin Horn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) took the loss as she allowed two earned runs on four hits. She issued six walks and struck out six batters in falling to 3-4 on the season.

The Cavaliers outhit Coastal Carolina 6-4 and had the leadoff runner on base in four of seven innings. UVa had a chance to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but, third-year shortstop Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) was thrown out trying to score from second on fourth-year third baseman Ruby Rojas’ (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) single. Rojas had two of Virginia’s six hits in the game.

Christina Doyle earned the shutout victory in the circle for the Chanticleers. She allowed six hits while striking out two and walking two.

In the nightcap, Coastal Carolina’s Morgan Tolleson fired a two-hit shutout in an 8-0 five-inning win. Tolleson struck out nine and walked just one batter in earning the victory.

The Chanticleers Suzanne Kimbrell broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Coastal Carolina used five singles and three walks to score five runs in the fifth inning to make the final score 8-0.

Field and second-year designated player Jenn Wynn (Herndon, Va./Herndon) registered the Cavaliers’ only hits in the game. Third-year pitcher Joanna Barstad (Canby, Ore./Canby) was saddled with the loss as she gave up seven runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Barstad (2-2) walked two and struck out two. First-year pitcher Christina Grimm (Los Osos, Calif./Morro Bay) pitched the final one-third of an inning and gave up one run on one hit while walking three batters.

The Cavaliers continue their spring break road trip with a doubleheader at 16th-ranked South Carolina on Wednesday (March 5). The first game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
