With less than a minute to play in regulation, Virginia’s Caitlin Banks won her second draw of the game and raced up field to set the Virginia attack, and in the set attack Amy Appelt drove across the arc and fired in a low shot that found the back of the net with 12 seconds to play, putting Virginia up 12-11. Meredith Lazarus then won her sixth draw of the night and the Cavaliers ran out the clock and held on for the win over James Madison tonight in Harrisonburg. Virginia’s Tiffany Schummer led the Cavalier defensive effort with three caused turnovers while Courtney Young had five ground balls for the Hoos. Lauren Aumiller added to her school record with another hat trick while also reaching the 80-assist mark with the second of her three assists, and Appelt also had a hat trick.
The Dukes notched the first goal of the evening just over a minute into the game, but the Cavaliers tied it up five minutes later as Lauri Kenis raced for a Dukes overthrow and the Hoos brought the ball upfield where Cary Chasney drew a shooting space foul and converted the 8-meter shot. Andrea Pfeiffer scooped up a loose ball on the next Madison possession and in the transition Kim Connors hit Morgan Thalenberg, who was in the arc. Thalenberg’s goal put the Cavaliers ahead 2-1 8minutes into the game. JMU tied the game just over a minute later, but Connors won the draw and got the ball to Aumiller, who fed Young in the arc. Thalenberg won the next draw and the Cavaliers worked the ball to Appelt, who rolled around the crease for Virginia’s seventh goal of the night and a 7-3 lead with 4:43 to play in the half. After the Dukes tied the game, Chasney started the run with a draw to herself. She brought the ball upfield and in the attack Appelt was fouled as she drove to the cage. Appelt converted the 8-meter shot putting Virginia back on top 8-7. Connors won the next draw and Virginia set for the next attack. Aumiller attempted a pass into the arc but the ball sailed into the net, giving Virginia a two-goal lead.
Banks took and won the next draw and set the Virginia offense, which she converted as she cut down the arc and buried a pass from Aumiller with 17 minutes to play in regulation, putting VIrginia up 10-7. JMU went on another 3-0 run as Staedt assisted each of the goals, as McKenzie, Brownridge, and Decker scored in a three-minute span to tie the game 10-10 with 8 minutes to go in regulation.
A Pfeiffer save kept the Dukes from taking the lead on the next possession, and in the Cavalier set attack, Appelt worked the ball behind and fed Aumiller as the Virginia captain raced down the arc. Aumiller’s quickstick goal gave Virginia the lead with 3:09 to go in regulation.
Chasney won the draw and the Cavaliers attempted to run out the clock, but they turned the ball over with just over a minute to play. The Dukes raced downfield and scored on a broken play with 54 seconds to tie the game at 11-11.
Banks won the draw and raced downfield, setting up the Virginia attack. The Cavaliers worked the ball out to Appelt who was on the right wing.
