This year’s SHOOT OUT CANCER Benefit Picnic will be held this Sunday, April 27 from 1-4 p.m. in the Amphitheater. Chaired by Men’s Soccer player Ryan Gibbs and hosted by the Student Athlete Mentor program, tickets are $5 and are available in advance from SAMs and at the Amphitheater. All proceeds go to benefit the Jennifer Fund, which provides aid to the families of children with cancer at the UVA Children’s Cancer Center.

“We linked up with the Jennifer Fund in 2001,” said Phil Gates, Life Skills Coordinator of the Virginia Department of Athletics. “The Fund is named for Jennifer Marshall and provides supplies for children and their families who are undergoing cancer treatment at UVa.”

“The UVa Children’s Medical Center (CMC) records over 130,000 patient visits each year,” said Patrick Belisle of the UVa Children’s Medical Center. “Any child with cancer in Central or Southwest Virginia (even parts of WV and NC) will come here for care. The CMC’s Jennifer Fund helps children with cancer and blood disorders to cope with their illness and pave the way to recovery. Specifically, funds have been used to buy comfortable recliner chairs for kids who have day-long chemotherapy treatments… and Nintendo players and videos so they won’t get too bored. Also, the fund buys phone cards for families far away from home, and helps them with their unmet ‘immediate needs’. Some of the funds are also used to further the research being done here at the UVa Children’s Medical Center to help find more cures for cancer. Already, 75% of childhood cancers are curable! Shoot Out Cancer and the CMC’s Jennifer Fund will help us lift that number toward 100%.”

Food for the event will be provided by Big Jim’s and Jersey Mike’s Subs and the event is sponsored by Hecht’s, Virginia National Bank, Big Jim’s and Jersey Mike’s.
