TRAVERSE CITY, MICH. – The Virginia women?s soccer team opened their 2003 schedule on Wednesday with a 9-1 win over Oakland in an exhibition match in Traverse City, Mich. The match was the first of a two-game trip preseason trip to Michigan, their second preseason trip to the state in the past three years.
Third-year forward Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) returned to her home state and had a strong performance, scoring four goals over the first 45 minutes of the game. Second-year forward Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) and second-year midfielder Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) each added two goals and an assist. Second-year midfielder Kara Frederick (Woodbridge, Va.) added the final Virginia goal. First-year midfielder Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) contributed three assists in her collegiate debut. Overall, head coach Steve Swanson was able to play every player on his roster in the game.
Virginia concludes its preseason trip to the Great Lakes State on Friday as they visit Michigan State. The Cavaliers, who are ranked No. 11 in the preseason NSCAA poll, open the regular season on Saturday, August 30 at Kl?ckner Stadium as they host No. 18 West Virginia at 1:00 p.m.
