CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #22 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a 2-0 shutout victory over the visiting Seton Hall Pirates in a first round match of the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship in front of 2,431 spectators at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium. The Cavaliers scored a pair of goals, one in each half, and held the Pirates offense attack in check to record their sixth shutout of the season and will now advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

After playing just over 33 minutes of scoreless soccer, Virginia jumped on the scoreboard first and posted the first goal of the game at 33:40 when UVa’s Adam Cristman received the ball and raced past a Seton Hall defender and pushed the ball diagonally upfield towards the right wing. After Cristman created some distance from a trailing defender with his speed, he then fired a one-timer past SHU goalkeeper Boris Pardo to make the score 1-0. Cristman’s goal, the eventual game-winner, was his sixth goal of the season and his fourth game-winner of the year. The Cavaliers took their 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Virginia came out in the second stanza looking to add another goal to its totals and did so at the 73:07 mark to take a commanding 2-0 lead with just under 17 minutes to play. After Seton Hall committed a foul deep in its own end, UVa’s Hunter Freeman served up a free kick into the box that teammate Ian Holder directed into goal on a diving header to give the Cavaliers a two-goal cushion. The goal was Holder’s second of the season and the assist was Freeman’s fourth of the year.

UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke made one save and it was enough to preserve the shutout and victory for the Cavaliers. SHU’s Pardo made a game-high two saves in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 10-9-2 overall, while the loss drops Seton Hall’s record to 9-6-4 on the season. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for UVa against SHU in men’s soccer. The Cavaliers are now 4-2-0 all-time in the series with the Pirates

Virginia will return to NCAA Tournament action on Wednesday, November 26th at 7:00 PM when UVa travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship at WFU’s Spry Soccer Stadium. The loss eliminates Seton Hall from the tournament and ends the Pirates season.
