The Virginia field hockey team (5-3) drew the first short corner of the contest, but the Tar Heels (8-0) got on the scoreboard first and held on for the 4-0 win today (Sep 19) in Chapel Hill. North Carolina converted on their second corner of the game to take the early lead as Rachel Dawson scored the first of her two goals on the day. Katherine Blair, Dawson’s teammate on the Junior National team, made eight saves in the first half to keep the Cavaliers close.
Dawson converted a scramble on the short corner to put UNC up 1-0 8:27 into the contest. With time winding down in the half, UNC intercepted a 16-yard hit and Kelsey Keeran scored at 34:41 to send UNC up 2-0 at the break.
The Cavaliers kept the Heels off the board for the first 22 minutes of the second half before Liz Morris scored at the 56:24 mark of the game. Dawson scored her second goal at 64:26 on another short corner.
The Cavaliers continue their road swing with a game at James Madison on Wednesday (Sep 22) in Harrisonburg. Game time is 4:00 pm.
