TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team continued its perfect start to the 2004 season, downing No. 8 Florida State 1-0 Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Cavaliers are now 9-0 on the season, 2-0 in the ACC, and continue their best start in over a decade.

The Cavaliers and Seminoles (7-2, 1-1) were scoreless at the half, although the Cavaliers had the better of the chances. In the second half, Virginia capitalized on its first chance, as a Seminole defender misplayed a clearance out the Cavalier end. The ball wound up on the foot of Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) who broke in all alone on a 50 yard run. As she got to the edge of the box, she blasted a shot just inside the far post to give the Cavaliers the lead. The one goal was all the Virginia defense needed, as they allowed just five shots in posting its seventh shutout of the season in nine games.

Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made two saves for Virginia, while Joy McKenzie made three for Florida State.

“I am very proud of our team tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “To play on the road in front of a great crowd against a quality opponent and produce this type of result is a testament to our players and the effort they gave tonight.”

The Cavaliers return home on Tuesday, September 28 as they host intrastate foe Richmond. Time of the game at Klockner Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
