Virginia hosts its own Marriott Cavalier Classic on Dec. 28-29. In opening round action on Dec. 28, Boston University and Holy Cross face off at 4:30 p.m. Virginia will play Yale at 7 p.m. On Dec. 29, the Third Place contest will tipoff at 4:30 p.m. with the Championship to follow at 7 p.m. All games will be played at University Hall. The Cavaliers open 2006 with Middle Tennessee State on Monday, Jan. 2. Tip-off at U-Hall is set for 4 p.m. WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast all the Cavaliers’ games with Jed Williams on play-by-play and Myron Ripley on color commentary.

Scouting Yale
The Bulldogs, under the guidance of first-year head coach Chris Gobrecht, stand 0-8 after an 88-37 loss at George Washington on Dec. 20. Freshman guard Kaitlyn Lillemoe paces the squad with 10.6 ppg, while sophomore post Sara McCollum adds 9.9 ppg and a team-best 6.8 rpg. Junior guard Kaitlin Emmerling chips in 7.5 ppg.

Series vs. Bulldogs
This is the first meeting between Virginia and Yale in the sport of women’s basketball.

Scouting Boston University
The Terriers, under the guidance of second-year head coach Kelly Greenberg, stand 6-3 after a 66-49 loss at Boston College on Dec. 18. Junior guard Katie Meinhardt paces the squad with 11.9 ppg, while sophomore guard Cheri Raffo adds 11.6 ppg. Senior guard Rachael Vanderwal is the team’s top rebounder with 6.7 rpg.

Series vs. Terriers
Virginia and Boston University have never met in the sport of women’s basketball.

Scouting Holy Cross
The Crusaders, under the guidance of 21st-year head coach Bill Gibbons, stand 3-6 after an 81-54 to No. 9 Connecticut on Dec. 19. Junior forward Kaitlin Foley paces the squad with 15.9 ppg, while senior guard Shannon Bush adds 11.4 ppg. Junior guard Brittany Keil is the rebounding leader with 6.8 rpg.

Series vs. Crusaders
In the teams’ only meeting on Dec. 1, 1989, at University Hall, Virginia captured a 72-71 win over Holy Cross in the opening round of the Cavalier Classic.

Scouting Middle Tennessee State
The Blue Raiders, under the guidance of first-year head coach Rick Insell, stand 6-4 after a 71-69 loss at Alabama-Birmingham on Dec. 19. Junior guard Chrissy Givens paces the squad with 21.7 ppg and 8.3 rpg, while junior forward Krystle Horton adds 13.0 ppg. MTS plays Tennessee Tech (Dec. 21) and Austin Peay (Dec. 28) before visiting Charlottesville.

This is the first meeting between Virginia and Middle Tennessee State in the sport of women’s basketball.

Classic History
Virginia has captured 15 of the 19 Cavalier Classic team titles since the tourney began in 1976. Started as the precursor to the ACC Tournament, the Cavalier Classic’s official name has changed several times through the years. North Carolina captured the first title in 1976, while N.C. State won the tourney in 1977. Auburn took home the title in 1998, while the host Cavaliers have 15 tourney championship titles.
