CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team will participate in the 2006 San Juan Shootout scheduled for Dec. 19-21 in Puerto Rico. Pairings for the tournament have been announced and Virginia meets Appalachian State University in the quarterfinals on Dec. 19.

Other quarterfinal games include Vanderbilt University vs. the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Northwestern University against Tennessee Tech University and the University of Utah vs. the University of Central Florida.

The winners of the Virginia-Appalachian State and Utah-Central Florida games will play in a semifinal game on Dec. 20, while the losers meet in a losers’ bracket game.

All eight teams will play three games in the tournament. This year’s tournament is the 20th annual San Juan Shootout.

This will be Virginia’s second tournament in Puerto Rico. The Cavaliers played in the Puerto Rico Shootout during the 1999-2000 season. UVa lost to the University of South Carolina in its first game in that tournament before defeating Providence College and Arizona State University.

Virginia’s entire 2006-07 schedule will be released at a later date.
