KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 20 Tennessee 1-0 in overtime. Ali Christoph scored on a penalty kick in the 98th minute to give the Lady Volunteers (1-1-1) a win in the first game in their new Regal Soccer Stadium.
“I am disappointed to lose the way we did,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “I thought we did enough good things to merit a win. I was pleased with how our team battled. Unfortunately we the final break didn’t go our way. We had our chances to win the game and didn’t do it.”
The first half remained scoreless, despite the Cavaliers having an 8-4 advantage in shots. It marked the first time this season that Virginia has not scored in the first half of a game. The Cavaliers had an opportunity in the 86th minute as Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) fired a shot off the crossbar. Tennessee keeper Jaimel Johnson controlled the rebound to end the threat.
In the first minute overtime, Tennessee’s Devon Swaim had a point blank shot that was smothered by Cavalier goalkeeper Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.). In the 98th minute Swaim suffered a foul in the box. Christoph took the ensuing penalty kick and scored to end the game.
In goal, de Vries made two saves for Virginia, while Johnson made four for Tennessee. In the game, Virginia had a 14-11 shot advantage, while Tennessee had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Cavaliers return home on Friday, September 8 as they host the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. Virginia will take on No. 15 Georgia at 7 p.m. In Friday’s first game, George Mason will play Seton Hall at 4:30 p.m.

Game Notes: The Cavaliers suffered their first loss of the season on Labor Day weekend for the fourth time in the past five years … The loss was Virginia’s third consecutive road loss … the Cavaliers are now 1-2-0 in their last three overtime games … the game was the second time in three years that Virginia opened an opponents’ new stadium, spoiling West Virginia’s debut of the Dick Dlesk Stadium, 1-0, in 2004.
