CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team opened play at the 2006 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic with a 2-0 win over No. 25 Georgia Friday night at Klockner Stadium. Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) and Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) scored for the Cavaliers, who improved to 4-1-0 on the season.
“Tonight we had a good team effort,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “Georgia is a quality team. I thought we did a good job of getting some early goals and taking the momentum.”
The Cavaliers struck first in the ninth minute of play. Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) fired a shot that hit off the post and rolled along the goal line to the other post. Rostedt, beat Georgia keeper Lauren Church to the ball, dribbled around her, and tucked the ball into the net. It was Rostedt’s first goal of the season, as she played her first game after missing the first four due to international duty.
In the 42nd minute, Caitlin Miskel (Boca Raton, Fla.) sent a cross to the far post that Quinn one-timed home for her second goal of the season.
In addition to Rostedt, the Cavaliers also welcomed back defender Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.), who was also playing in her first game of the year. Both players were on the United States team that recently completed play at the U-20 World Championships in Russia.
“We really haven’t had Nikki or Jess around for nine months (due to U-20 commitments,” Swanson said. “It was good to see how well they fit right into the lineup. We didn’t look disjointed at all. That is a testament to both those players, and our whole team.”
The Cavaliers outshot the Bulldogs (2-2-0) 25-3 in the contest, and had a 6-2 corner kick edge. In goal, Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made a season high three saves for Virginia, as she recorded her third shutout of the season. Church made nine saves for Georgia.
In the tournament’s first game, George Mason defeated Seton Hall 1-0. The tournament concludes Sunday. At noon, Georgia will play George Mason, with the Cavaliers’ game against Seton Hall to follow at 2:30 p.m.
