Missed Extra Point Gives Cavaliers Win Over Cowboys In Overtime, 13-12

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -A missed extra point in overtime by Wyoming’s Aric Goodman allowed Virginia to escape with a 13-12 victory over the Cowboys on Saturday.
The Cavaliers (1-1) went ahead on the first play of OT when backup quarterback Kevin McCabe hit Kevin Ogletree for a 25-yard touchdown. Chris Gould added the extra point.
Wyoming (1-1) pulled within one after Jacob Doss threw a 3-yard TD pass to Chris Sundberg on fourth-and-1, but Goodman’s point-after attempt sailed wide right and the Cavaliers celebrated.
McCabe, who replaced struggling starter Christian Olsen on Virginia’s first possession of the fourth quarter, finished 8-of-13 for 85 yards. Ogletree had 10 catches for 95 yards.
The Cavaliers (1-1) sputtered again on offense, gaining only 206 yards after a 211-yard performance in the season-opening loss to Pittsburgh.
Wyoming (1-1) had 313 yards, but 60 of those came on two fake punts in the first quarter.
John Wendling took the direct snap and ran 29 yards on the first fake, and the same play clicked for 31 yards on fourth-and-12 from the Cowboys’ 15 on their next possession.
Wendling’s first run kept alive a 13-play, 73-yard drive that ended with Goodman’s 23-yard field goal with 8:53 left in the first period. A 17-yard pass from Doss to Wynel Seldon on third-and-7 and a 20-yard run by Devin Moore were other big plays in the drive.
Wendling’s second long gainer moved Wyoming to its own 46, but the drive ended five plays later when Marcus Hamilton, a senior cornerback, recorded his 11th career interception and returned it 29 yards to the Virginia 33.
Virginia finally scored when Gould kicked a 29-yard field goal with 6:33 left in the second quarter.
Wyoming reached the Virginia 1 on its first possession of the second half, but Seldon fumbled as he tried to leap over the line and Hamilton recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback.
The Cowboys got the ball right back when Dorsey Golson intercepted a Christian Olsen pass at the Virginia 22, setting up Goodman’s 39-yard field goal with 6:40 left in the third period.
Josh Zidenberg blocked a punt to set Virginia up at the Wyoming 14 late in the third quarter, but three plays lost 3 yards and the Cavaliers had to settle for Gould’s 34-yard field goal on the final play of the period to make it 6-6.
The victory was Virginia’s first in three tries this decade over teams from the Mountain West Conference. The Cavaliers lost to BYU in 2000 and to Colorado State in 2002.
